Turmeric is a commonly known spice that is mustard yellow in color and popularly used when cooking, especially Indian meals.

You may not be aware that turmeric also comes in an oil form with many potential benefits to your health. A few of these benefits include reducing inflammation, improving skin health, and even boosting immunity as well.

Turmeric is a natural herb and essential oil which is extracted from the root of the plant. It is considered to be one of the most powerful herbs.

Because of its many benefits, we have included turmeric essential oil in our Muscle and Joint Relief Salve. When CBD and turmeric essential oil are paired together, they may help relieve pain and inflammation while also conditioning your skin.

Beauty benefits and uses of Turmeric essential oil

Acne reduction

Acne is a skin condition characterized by unsightly pimples and lesions and occurs when dead cells and excess oil clog up the skin pores.

Turmeric essential oil is an antimicrobial that may help in fighting acne and preventing further breakouts. Turmeric essential oil is most effective in treating skin issues when included in a CBD salve.

Reduces scarring and wrinkles

Turmeric essential oil may also hold anti-aging properties as well. Plus, it may also reduce scarring due to the presence of natural antioxidants.

Reduces skin inflammation

Turmeric essential oils contain a compound known as curcumin which helps to prevent bacterial infections. Turmeric is also known for its anti-inflammatory benefits, which can greatly improve the health of your skin.

Reduces dandruff

Dandruff is a scalp condition characterized by white flakes that are actually the skin of the scalp falling off.

It is normal for the skin to exfoliate. The trouble is when it becomes too much and the white flakes become excessive and visible to the naked eye.

There are several reasons for getting dandruff including dry skin, allergies, medical conditions of the scalp, and yeast overgrowth.

Turmeric oil may help get rid of dandruff gradually and permanently with regular use.

Helps with hair loss

Hair can fall off gradually or it can fall off in frightening speed and you notice the change gradually. Sometimes it thins at the front, which is a common occurrence among aging people or you may notice bald patches on your head.

Either way, hair loss is distressing to a lot of people. We lose hair all the time but as soon as hair falls off, new hair grows. With hair loss, there’s no growth of new hair to replace what fell off.

There are a lot of reasons as to why hair falls off. Some of them are:

  • Pregnancy
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Medication
  • Genetic reasons
  • Radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatments
  • Stress
  • Hairstyles that strain the hairline

Turmeric essential oil contains anti-fungal properties and if the hair loss is caused by fungi, it will grow back with regular use.

Turmeric has over three hundred active antioxidants which may promote hair growth and keep the rest of your hair healthy.

Facial masks

Turmeric essential oil is used in facial masks for its anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, antioxidant, and healing properties.

It has no serious side effects and will leave your skin glowing.

Health benefits and uses of Turmeric essential oil

Cancer

Turmeric has been used for thousands of years as a medicinal herb. Many of its components have anti-inflammatory and antitumorigenic properties.

A 2012 study that involved 44 men with lesions in their colons found that curcumin, which is derived from turmeric, helped to reduce the size of these lesions by up to 40 percent.

Curcumin has the potential to kill cancer cells without doing the same to normal, good cells.

Alzheimer’s disease

This is a progressive, neurological condition that causes the brain cells to die. Over time, it affects a person’s ability to function independently and it has no cure. The aim of the treatment is to help with the symptoms.

That is where turmeric essential oils come in.

In countries where turmeric is used frequently, there are fewer incidences of Alzheimer’s disease.

Studies show that in India, where turmeric is used to cook almost all the meals, there are 4.4 times fewer Alzheimer’s patients than in America. The anti-inflammatory effects may help promote brain health and reduce the instance of Alzheimer’s.

While still on the topic of brain disorders, it is worth noting that turmeric may help to improve memory, but more research is needed before we know more.

Boosting the immune system

One of turmeric’s benefits is that it boosts one’s immunity even with people who suffer from immune disorders.

Used regularly, turmeric oils can help you avoid those seasonal colds and flu, and other opportunistic illnesses. Curcumin has antifungal properties and is active against respiratory tract viruses.

Pain relief

Studies have shown that turmeric reduces pain in a similar way that the popular over-the-counter medication ibuprofen does, especially with people suffering from arthritis.

Liver function

Turmeric essential oils improve liver function by protecting it from being damaged by toxins. This is especially true for people who suffer from chronic conditions like diabetes and use drugs for long unspecified periods.

Studies show that curcumin can potentially prevent and treat nonfatty liver disease.

Lowers cholesterol

Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in the blood and is needed in the production of healthy cells, and is produced in the liver.

However, high cholesterol puts you at risk of heart disease or stroke. High cholesterol usually doesn’t have any noticeable symptoms so the only way to know your cholesterol levels is to get checked.

Turmeric may help to lower your cholesterol by detoxifying the liver which in turn curbs the production of cholesterol.

Heart health

Turmeric can reverse heart disease by improving the functions of the cells that line the interior surface of blood vessels, knows as the endothelium.

The endothelium helps to regulate blood pressure as well as other functions that all contribute to heart health.

Research published by the American Physiological Society showed that curcumin helped to increase exercise tolerance in mice.

Increased digestive health

As a medicinal herb, turmeric has been used for thousands of years to soothe upset stomachs as well as gastrointestinal diseases like irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn’s disease.

It also stimulates the digestive system thus getting rid of digestive issues like bloating and constipation.

Turmeric essential oil with CBD can promote many health benefits.

Side effects of turmeric

All compounds have side effects and turmeric is no different. The difference with naturally occurring compounds like turmeric is that most have minimal side effects.

Essential oils should not be used undiluted and turmeric oil is no different.

Interaction with blood thinners

Turmeric can interact with blood thinners and cause bleeding. If you take blood thinners, err on the side of caution and talk to your health care provider before consuming turmeric essential oil.

Can lower blood sugar

Turmeric has been shown to have a good effect on diabetes. However, for a person on diabetes medication, turmeric can magnify its effects. This can increase the risk of developing hypoglycemia.

If you have diabetes, speak to your doctor before consuming turmeric essential oils.

Can cause kidney stones

Turmeric contains oxalates which naturally occur in many herbs and plants.

Kidney stones are solid crystals that form when there is too much calcium and oxalates and not enough liquids.

Can limit the absorption of iron

For people with iron deficiency, taking an excess of turmeric essential oil can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb iron.

Turmeric can cause an allergic reaction

Allergic reactions like rashes, shortness of breath, and other reactions can occur when turmeric is taken orally or topically.

It is rare to have an allergic reaction with turmeric, but it is best to be on the safe side. Before using a topical product with turmeric essential oil, test the salve on a small section of your skin first.

If you do experience an allergic reaction, stop the use of turmeric immediately and if the reaction is severe, see a doctor.
